We have been super lucky to join forces with the lovely Cottages & Castles twice this year, if you haven’t heard of them before then Cottages & Castles offer self catering accommodation across Scotland. You can find everything from a modern bungalow to an actual castle with sprawling lawns & indoor swimming pool. There’s country escapes & seaside breaks, wilderness lodges & modern glass fronted apartments & there is something for all budgets. Whether you are looking to plan a large family Christmas break, a romantic, just for two weekend away or a home fully stocked with everything for a family trip to the seaside you are sure to find what you are looking for.

We have been lucky enough to stay in two of the properties you can find on Cottages & Castles, the first back in December. Mid way through one of the busiest months of the year we managed to restore a little calm & stay in the beautiful Laggandhu, a remote self catering cottage nestled within a traditional highland estate, not another house or street light in sight & perfect for escaping to with views boasting the beautiful Cairngorm Mountains or, closer to home, the native woodland. With 3 bedrooms; 1 double & 2 twins it was the perfect size for us. A large dining kitchen with the most beautiful pheasant print wood burning stove & antique french furniture, a cosy living room, 2 bathrooms & a bedroom for each of the girls we felt perfectly at home.

We spent much of our time just enjoying the cottage & immediate surroundings, going for walks then snuggling up in front of the cosy fire, we ventured into Aviemore for a mooch & to feed the ducks at the local lochs but to be honest when you are staying in a cottage this beautiful it’s hard to tear yourself away from it.

A few months later we were invited to stay in the picturesque seaside village of Cullen, on the Banffshire coast, somewhere we had never ventured to before & were completely blown away by, I grew up living by the seaside & waking up to the sounds of the sea birds, waves crashing & the fresh sea air just took me straight back to me childhood of fish & chips from newspaper & ice creams on the beach. The Cottage we stayed in was the recently refurbished Rosebank boasting everything a family could want from highchairs to buckets & spades. The cottage comprised of an open kitchen, dining, living air which was great for us to be able to enjoy the fire, cook up a storm & keep an eye on the girls, it also had a separate living room with another log burner where we retreated to in the evenings. Upstairs was two double rooms, 1 twin room & a family bathroom, the cottage was just perfectly located – a stones throw from the beach & we felt immediately at home when we arrived.

We were blessed with glorious sunshine, in February – a miracle in itself…this meant we spent everyday on the beach; exploring rock pools, finding treasure & building sandcastles. We ate the famous homemade ice cream & of course sampled the local fish & chips but other than that we just enjoyed spending time together in a really beautiful setting. I find my girls are happiest outside, on a beach with nature for entertainment. We will definitely be returning to Cullen & hopefully next time we get to spot some dolphins!
